Sugar ants, often called banded sugar ants, are large ants with an orange band around a black body. They are common in Brisbane gardens and homes, but many people only notice them at night, when they come out to forage on benches, in bins and around outdoor lights. During the day they hide in their nests. They do not sting, though they can give a small bite if handled.
These ants nest in soil under paths and pavers, in rotting timber, tree hollows and sometimes wall cavities.
